Sports Day Blog
Sports Day 2016 was held for the first time at the Mary Peters Track, Belfast. This was a new initiative by the PE Department to, not only provide the opportunity for more students to perform on a ‘proper’ track, but to ultimately attempt to increase Sports Day participation levels throughout the various age groups. This proved to be a huge success with almost 200 students participating in the glorious sunshine!
Performance levels were of a high standard throughout the age groups and throughout the various events. This was particularly evident in the 3000m races held on the Tuesday prior to Sports Day where we had 16 competitors.
Daniel Moorcroft dominated the Middle Distance Events winning the Junior Boys 3000m, 1500m and 800m beating Jonathan Liggett into 2nd place on each occasion. Zak Brennan, Zach Capper and Matthew Wilson set high standards in the Junior Boys sprint events. UK Schools Games athlete, Hannah Vogan performed well in her specialised events winning the JG 100m, 200m and Long Jump events. Other stand out performances came from Luke Bell (IB) 3000m, 1500m, Mark Johnston (SB) 800m, Nathaniel Ferris and Daniel Rowland in the Senior Boys sprint events, Jamie Rowland in the Senior Boys 1500m and Jordan Taylor winning all three throwing events in the Senior Boys Competition.
The various relay competitions proved to be the highlight of the day with each house well represented throughout . MacCallum proved to be the fastest on the day winning a large majority of the sprint races. MacCallum Junior Boys team broke the school’s record in a time of 49.00sec.
All in all, a very successful Sports Day, thanks mainly to the venue, weather, participation levels and most of all the standard of competition throughout.
Roll on the District Championships!!
