Ellie Currie, Viggo Stanczak and Amelie Dobson recently participated in the Edgar Graham Memorial Public Speaking Competition. This annual competition is held in the prestigious surroundings of Parliament Buildings, Stormont. Each speaker delivers a five-minute talk in the Senate Chamber.
Ellie spoke on “The New American Dream”, namely the aspiration to see more women in leadership positions in American politics. Viggo reflected on the need to educate young people politically so that they can vote independently as opposed to endorsing the views of their families, while Amelie addressed the timely topic of plastic waste.
All were articulate, persuasive and informative. Ellie was placed second in a strong field which, as usual, attracted accomplished speakers from schools throughout Northern Ireland and an illustrious audience, including Lady Trimble.
This continues Portadown College’s excellent profile in this event, having either won it or being nominated runner-up since 2013.
