In girls hockey PC 1st XI beat Dalriada in Sudden Death strokes in the Quarter Final of SS Plate, and 2A XI beat Glenlola Collegiate 2-1 to progress to the Semi Final of the 2nds Plate.
In a fast-paced and thrilling quarter-final, Portadown College 1st XI demonstrated exemplary teamwork, tenacity, energy and resilience throughout the match but particularly towards the end when pressed by a determined side from Dalriada. The College girls had all of the chances in the second half in particular and their missed shots at goal ran into double figures but were defended by an excellent goalkeeper from Dalriada. It was a great team effort with every girl giving her all but special credit is due to Abbie McCullough for her indefatigable skill and Kerrie Burns for her talent and leadership. The Ballymoney side had a couple of chances at goal and it seemed as though PC were going to be robbed of a well-deserved victory with cruel irony.
The short-lived two way extra time failed to resolve the impasse and there was consternation amongst the College girls as they realised they were to face penalty shots against a keeper who had been so effective at denying them of goals from so many chances.
The end result was fair and justice was served. Portadown goalkeeper Holly Bothwell deserves credit for maintaining her cool and denying the other side a victory during the penalties. The team’s penalty practice at training paid off and there was great celebration as the PC team were victorious and achieved a place in the semi-final of the Plate.
