As a member of the Craigavon Area Learning Community, Portadown College was delighted to welcome Sixth Form Chemistry students from Lismore Comprehensive, Lurgan College and St. Ronan’s College to join a group of Portadown College students in the inaugural Almac Challenge on 2 December. In partnership with Eye4Education and Almac, the purpose of this unique event was to select up to 24 students from a field of almost 70 to compete for placement positions with the local company in Spring 2016.

Through an intensive one-day programme, participants underwent aptitude testing, group assessments with tasks, individual interviews and the creation of mock applications for a Lab Assistant role. Ten business advisors from Almac and two Eye4Education leaders facilitated the initiative which afforded students a first hand insight into the selection and recruitment process in a ‘real life’ context.

Students and facilitators alike agreed that the experience had been invaluable in developing the skills of problem solving, presentation and leadership essential in the competitive and challenging world of work.
