PORTADOWN COLLEGE STUDENT’S SUCCESS IN MOVING IMAGE ART
Portadown
College
student Kathryn McClure was Highly Commended by the examination board CCEA for her work in Moving Image Art at AS level. Kathryn achieved full marks in her animation coursework after producing a piece of film based entirely on her own illustrations. The technique which she adopted is known as “stop motion animation” and it involves the painstaking production of stills, each of which develops the narrative. Kathryn’s work was inspired by the German Expressionists and the films of Tim Burton which she admires for their idiosyncratic quirkiness, angular shapes and lack of naturalism.
The story of Kathryn’s animated film involved a fox who replaced the fallen moon with a chalk drawing and then continued to draw objects which came to life such as plums which grew into a ballerina. She hopes to continue to study illustration or animation in Edinburgh and ultimately pursue a career in this field.
