The Portadown College Debating Team have won a place at the UK Final of the prestigious Business and Professional Women’s Public Speaking Competition after winning every category at the Northern Ireland Regional Final.

The provincial final was held in Craigavon Civic Centre on Saturday 6th February and the team from PortadownCollege were successful against schools from across Northern Ireland.

Emma Kenny (Year 14) was awarded the Best Speaker after impressing the adjudicators with her speech entitled It’s the Sun wot won it! addressing the topical issue of the power of the press in society today.  When Richard Hill and Jane Balmer (both from Year 13) were named as Best Chairman and Best Expresser of Thanks respectively, it was clear that the team were going to be presented with the overall award for Best Team for 2009/10.

The students and their teacher, Mrs C. Irwin, can now look forward to travelling to Shropshire to compete in the UK Final on 26th March 2010, competing against the very best school teams from England, Scotland and Wales.
